A recommendation of Werner Krauss: Greenmesquite. Solid Texan experience, Austin style. No posh; just order 2, 3 or 4 meat BBQ platter, a pitcher of Shiner Bock, and you will be well served. A place where men are still men and w...omen like it that way (to quote Jimmy Rodgers, the blue yodeler). Where the hippie meets the redneck (to quote another stereotype), and both proudly horrify vegetarians (who will get their okras, cole slaw and pinto beans and German potato salad anyway). Definitively a good place to ride out Klimakatastrophe andother fleabites.
. Lisboa - right at the Tejo. You can pay a lot for sea food, or you can pay less and eat better - for instance in the 'Vale do Rio' at 'Largo Alfredo Dinis', (12,13,14; tel.: 21 2723160; search for "Largo Alfredo Dinis" on Google Earth). You can take the underground to Cais do Sodré and from there the boat to Casillas /Almada to cross the Tejo. Abfahrt von Estação Fluvial do Cais do Sodré). You get out of the boat and head a few tens of meters to the front and then it is on your right. Says something like Marisqueria Vale do Rio. But other restaurants are likely equally good or maybe better. We paid something like 30 EUR for lots of food and beer.
Bologna is certainly a place, where on can enjoy Italian food. The little street "Via Broccaindosso" (between Strada Maggiore and san Vitale) offers several nice and small restaurants, all of which are sometimes closed. One is the Tratoria Spiga (Via Broccaindosso 21/a, 051 230063).

An inspection of San Francisco on the occasion of an AGU conference resulted in one very good opportunity to eat crab - namely in the Crustacean (1475 Polk Street, cable car stops in front; phone for reservation 415.776.CRAB; ask for Ahi as a starter and then Roast Dungeon Crab. The other good thing was a breakfast in the Grandview in the Hyatt at the 36th floor. Very nice view, prices comparable to breakfasts in other hotels.

Gediegende Gastronomie mit "Texas Smoked Bar-B-B-Que Beef", "Bull Riding", Country Musik, für alle Texas Fans ein Muss. Nur 1 Stunde vom Flughafen Dallas Fort Worth, 30 Minuten von UT Arlington, oder 3 Stunden von Texas AM mit dem schicken SUV.

It is small, cosy, and a bit rotten. They serve also hot whiskey, in case you got the flu. Some say this is the only bar in Paris, where the Guinness is imported from Ireland, and the only "pas Paddy-plastique" Irish pub in Paris. Also it hosts the best Irish traditional music sessions in Paris (click on Activités) - no amplification! The music is downstairs. Be careful when coming up from down below to order the next round: the dart playing is going on in the stairway...

Vienna: Home of the Austrian Weather Service at Hohe Warte, where hundred years ago such giants as Julius von Hann and, a bit later, Eduard Brückner were pioneers of climate and climate impact research. Since a few years also a regular meeting point for all kind of geo-scientists, because of the ... EGU.
Martin heimann's advice: Weary of EGU? Try the Restaurant and winebar Cantinetta Antinori, Jasomirgottstrasse 3, very close to Stephansdom. Antinori, one of the best wine producer from Tuscany runs 4 cantinette: in Florence, Zurich, Vienna and Moscow. Never disappointed. Also an interesting place: Restaurant Steiereck / Meierei im Stadtpark.
For beer drinking groups, the Bierhof is a adequate choice. Call for a reservation.
And, of course, Kaffeehäuser, as suggested by a Viennese lady professor: Cafe Landtmann next to the Burgtheater, the Ringstrassen Cafe Prückel, or Cafe Engländer.
Empfehlung von Martin Heimann: Kleine aber extrem feine italienische Küche in der Osteria del Collio, Himmelpfortgasse 17, Nähe Stefansdom, (Gault Milliau 1Stern - und nicht teuer!). Wohnzimmeratmosphäre - nur ~10 Tische - daher entweder sehr früh oder spät erscheinen oder im Voraus reservieren. (Sonntags geschlossen - keine Kreditkarten!)

La Mariana, die Erfüllung langgehegter Träume von einem verlorenen Insel-Paradies, ein Time-warp in die 60er Jahre mit Mai-Tai, Tikki Göttern und Aloha-Kitsch, akustisch garniert mit Flugzeuglärm, dem Rauschen eines künstlichen Wasserfalls und verstimmten Klavierklängen. Ein Muss fuer jeden Klimaforscher: der Zombie Cocktail, serviert in einem Holztotenschädel, in graphischer Antizipation des folgenden Hang-overs. For a good Poki-eating, also the Haiku Gardens in Kaneohe are not bad.
Boulder in Colorado is an unavoidable destination for the scientific traveller, mostly becauses of the National Center of Atmospheric Research. There are numerous hotels, equally boring as all American hotels, except for the Boulderado, which was built by Boulder business people as a luxury hotel to attract visitors - and opened in 1909. A truely remarkable building, with an antique elevator, thick carpets (so that the visitors are not disturbed in case of shoot-outs). An event, which I remember was the raucious "smoke-out" party on the evening before smoking was forbidden in restaurants in Boulder. Quite an event. Unfortuntaley not really cheap - but not only is the ambiente first class - there is also a first class breakfast restaurant Q, where a top eggs benedict is served. For the jet-lagged traveller is it good to know that Q opens at 6:30 am. The Corner Bar is something for the early evening, with the "beer of the day" for 2$/glas and various small dishes.

Also Bergen is a regular destination for the scientific traveller, with the Geophysical Institute and the Bjerknes Center. Bergen is in Norway - which means that bars are usually a bit protestantic and very expensive.
Renting a room in the hotel Strand is not too expensive, and the lucky visitor may get a room with harbour view, which may, however, be associated with some noise commencing in the early morning. But there is a bar in the 2nd floor (Femte i Andre Bar), where the beer is as expensive as anywhere else, but which has a attractive atmosphere - with wall posters reminding on a widow Kröpelin, who came from the Mecklenburg city of Kröpelin in the 19th century, and began a very successful business of importing wine and similarly sinful substances to Bergen - allegedly with her own ship. Also, detective Varg Veum, known from good Norwegian suspension stories by Gunnar Staalesen, had his office right on this floor.

Bern is one of the world class places of climate research - in Switzerland which means - first: expensive and second: not extremely urban. Without the help of a guide, it is a bit difficult to find interesting places. Two bars may be mentioned, the Café des Pyrénées (Kornhausplatz 17) and the Arbergerhof. In the latter, the chairs are placed on the tables at 23:00, while in the former this happens one hour later. The atmosphere in the Café des Pyrénées is very reasonable, noise level ok. The Arbergerhof has a bit of a Bahnhofshalle. The glas sizes are ok, though.
Cheese fondue is something I do not miss when visiting Bern: for instance in the Le Mazot am Bärenplatz 5. Supposedly cheap.
Hamburg, Germany. One of our favorite Kneipen (bars) is the Geel (Koppel 76, St. Georg), where many patrons look like leftovers of the 1968 time, a bit sourly, at the same time progressive and conservative, righteous, but peaceful and mostly quiet; beer drinking and eating mostly simple but good food without being disturbed by loud music or people at the next table.
Stellenbosch, an Afrikaaner center with a famous university, where the ideological basis og apartheid was set up, but which seems in these days to act responsibly, is touristically undoubtedly a nice destination. Kleinstradtmilieu - I was placed in a pension "De Oude Meul", quite different, but nice. Since this is vineland, there is vine all over the place, and beer glases are too small. Good Afrikaaner food in the Oude Werf.
In Cape Town? a wateriung place is Rick's Café Amémericain in the park road, monday to saturday. Patrons are almost entirely white. Apartheid is still in the heads and practices even if not openly enforced, for course.
